Around Redcliffe

Sun, salt & sea air

Redcliffe sits out on the Redcliffe Peninsula, facing Moreton Bay. It's one of the older parts of the region, so alongside newer builds there are plenty of driveways that have seen a lot of years and a lot of weather.

Coastal conditions are hard on concrete surfaces. Salt carried on the sea breeze settles on driveways and paths, humid air keeps shaded areas damp and mouldy, and strong sun bleaches colour faster. Once the seal has worn through, all of that gets into the surface.

Restoring it reverses most of that. A proper clean takes off the mould and grime, repairs close up the cracks, and a fresh seal gives the concrete a protective layer again. A hose-down every so often afterwards helps keep the salt off.

What we'll look at

What the coast does to it

Near the water, these are the things we pay most attention to on a Redcliffe driveway.

  • Mould and mildew

Shaded, damp areas are checked closely. They need the most work in the clean, and they're where the seal matters most.

  • Surface condition

Concrete close to the water can show more wear on top. We check how sound the surface is before anything is sealed.

  • Older coatings

Long-established driveways often have old coatings that have chalked or peeled. Those come off first.

  • Steps and paths

Front steps and paths take the same weather, so they're usually worth including.

Common questions

Asked in Redcliffe

Anything not covered here, call 0438 708 830 and ask.

Does salt air damage concrete driveways in Redcliffe?

It can wear them down over time. Salt settles on the surface and works into unsealed or worn concrete, and humid coastal air helps mould grow. A good seal keeps more of it out, and an occasional hose-down helps.

Should I reseal my driveway if I live near the water?

It's a good idea. A sealer gives the concrete a barrier against salt, moisture and stains, and makes mould easier to wash off. Near the coast, a seal is doing more work than one further inland.

Will a new seal stop my Redcliffe driveway going mouldy again?

It makes mould much harder to take hold and much easier to wash off, but it won't make concrete mould-proof. Shady, damp spots near the coast will still grow some over time, and a regular hose and sweep keeps them in check.
