Stencilled patio, mid-clean
What's involved
New colour, same pattern
Stencilled concrete gets its colour from a coloured layer near the surface, not all the way through. Sun and traffic wear that layer down, so a stencilled driveway fades into patchy, washed-out colour with grey concrete showing through.
-
Step 1: Pick the colour
We look at the driveway or patio and talk colour: back to what it was, or something new. Darker colours hide marks; lighter ones stay cooler underfoot.
-
Step 2: Pressure clean
The surface is cleaned right down, getting the grime out of the stencil joints and taking off old coating that's already letting go.
-
Step 3: Repairs
Cracks and chipped edges are filled so they don't show through the new colour.
-
Step 4: Re-colour
The new colour goes on over the existing surface. The stencil pattern is still there underneath, so it keeps showing through as the colour is built up.
-
Step 5: Seal and cure
A seal goes over the colour to protect it, and it's left to cure. We'll give you the timing before anyone drives on it.
Before & after
Faded to finished
Stencilled driveway
Dusty pink to deep blue-grey
Faded to a patchy pink, then re-coloured in a deep blue-grey from the lawn edge to the garage door. Look closely and the stencil pattern still runs right through it.
What it suits
Right for your stencilled drive?
Re-colouring suits stencilled concrete that's sound but has faded, gone patchy, or is simply a colour you never liked. Plenty of stencilled driveways were laid in terracotta, pink or sandstone tones, and changing to a charcoal or blue-grey can modernise the whole front of a house without breaking any concrete.
It's one of the bigger visual changes you can make to a house for the size of the job, and the pattern stays, so it still looks like a stencilled driveway, just a well-kept one.
If the concrete is cracked right through or the surface is badly broken up, those repairs come first, and some may still show. We'll tell you what to expect before you choose.

Anything not covered here, call 0438 708 830 and ask.
Can a faded stencilled driveway be re-coloured without losing the pattern?
Yes. The new colour goes over the existing surface and the stencil pattern keeps showing through it. The before-and-after on this page shows a pink stencilled driveway re-coloured blue-grey with the pattern still there.
Can I change my stencilled driveway to a completely different colour?
Yes, you aren't stuck with the original colour. Darker colours like charcoal hide stains well but get hotter in full sun; lighter colours stay cooler and show tyre marks more. We can talk it through when we look at it.
Why has my stencilled concrete faded so much?
Because its colour sits in a layer near the surface, and sun and traffic wear that layer away. As it thins, the colour goes patchy and the grey concrete underneath starts to show, usually worst where the tyres run.
How do I look after a re-coloured stencilled driveway?
Keep it clean and re-seal it when it starts looking dull. Hose off dirt and leaves before they stain, and don't let oil sit on it. A sealer that's kept up is what keeps the colour from fading again.
