Pool surround
What's involved
Made for wet feet
A pool surround takes more punishment than almost any other concrete at the house: splashed chlorinated or salt water, constant wetting and drying, full sun, bare feet, and pool furniture dragged around on it.
-
Step 1: Look and quote
We look at the surround: concrete or pebblecrete, any old sealer, any cracks, and what's around the edges (coping, tiles, glass or metal fencing, drains).
-
Step 2: Clean
The surround is pressure cleaned to get the dirt, algae and mould off and out of the surface, without blasting debris into the pool.
-
Step 3: Repairs and edges
Cracks are filled, and the coping, fence spigots and drains are masked or worked around so sealer doesn't end up on tiles, glass or in the water.
-
Step 4: Seal
The sealer goes on once it's dry, with a finish chosen for a wet area: grip matters more here than gloss.
-
Step 5: Cure
The area is kept clear while it cures. We'll tell you when it's right to walk on, and when the furniture can go back.
What it suits
What we seal around pools
Sealing suits concrete and pebblecrete pool surrounds that are going grey, growing algae in the damp corners, or starting to look rough under bare feet. The sealer helps keep pool water and salt out of the surface and makes the whole area easier to hose clean.
Saltwater pools are worth a special mention. Splashed salt water dries in the surface of the concrete and can slowly break it down; a sealed surface keeps more of it out, and a hose-down now and then helps too.
If the surround is pebblecrete, the same care goes into bringing the colour of the stones back up, which is covered on the pebblecrete sealing page. Tiled and stone-paved surrounds are a different job.

Pool surround sealing, straight answers
Anything not covered here, call 0438 708 830 and ask.
Does a concrete pool surround need sealing?
It's a good idea. Pool water, salt, chlorine and constant wetting and drying are hard on bare concrete and pebblecrete, and a sealed surface resists stains, algae and mould and is easier to keep clean.
Will sealing make my pool surround slippery?
It can make a smooth surface slipperier when wet, so the finish matters more around a pool than anywhere else. Lower-sheen sealers and anti-slip additives are common choices for pool areas, and it's one of the things we'll talk through when we look at the job.
Can you seal around the pool coping and glass fencing?
Yes, the edges are part of the job. Coping, fence spigots and drains are masked or worked around carefully so sealer doesn't end up on tiles, glass or in the pool.
Is a saltwater pool harder on the concrete around it?
It can be. Splashed salt water dries and leaves salt in the surface, which can break concrete down over time. A good seal helps keep it out, and hosing the surround down now and then helps too.
Will sealing change how my pool surround looks?
A little, and usually for the better. A clear seal deepens the colour of the concrete or stones and gives an even finish, while a tinted one can refresh faded colour. It won't hide deep cracks or change the surface texture, so if you want a completely different look, sealing alone won't get you there.
